It’s been 43 years since the first mobile phone was released to the public, and the world has changed drastically since the event. With over two thirds of the global population now owning and using mobile phones on a daily basis, we visit the past and talk about the history of the mobile phone. From the modern best mobile deals to the ancient 70’s brick phones, we are going to cover it all.
A man called Martin Cooper, a Motorola senior engineer, calls a rival telecom company. During this call he lets the other person know that he is talking to them via a wireless mobile phone. This is the first mobile phone ever used for a call, it was a huge brick of a phone, roughly 30 centimeters by 13 centimeters across. With one charge you would get 30 minutes of talk time and the unit would take 10 hours to charge back up!
Ten years after the first call was made, Motorola released its flagship mobile phone – the DynaTAC. The unit had a built in memory for phone numbers, provided 30 minutes of call time and 6 hours of standby. The phone was released to the public for the hefty price of $4000. How’s that for the best mobile deals?
Things were slow to start with in the mobile phone industry, most of the phones where old bricks weighing up to 10 kg per unit. However, this all changed in ’97 when Nokia released the 6110. The 6110 had revolutionary features like built in games, calculator, clock, calendar, currency converter, pager and came in 4 different colors!
Since then the mobile phone industry has exploded and all these years later, the industry is the fastest growing on the planet.
